Usually
I’m not that sentimental. But with the 14th of February getting closer I couldn’t
get this phrase out of my head:
‘let go, hold on’
My dear artistic friend, Henrike Gootjes made a beautiful artwork holding this phrase... I loved it straight away. It feels like it gets new meanings every time.
Right now I realize how many dear friends I had to let go over the last few years. Most of them I had to let go because of distance. It’s not easy to say goodbye if you realize you might not see them again. There are things you just can’t share by email, phone calls or WhatsApp. There is the thing called living together, laughing and crying that could never be replaced by social media and phones. There are these wonderful people around the world where we shared our lives with, the good days and the bad; and we had to say goodbye. We’re lucky we got to know all these wonderful people in Australia, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Myanmar and of course the Netherlands.... but we had to let go to be able to start our life in a new place. We have to invest in new friendships, we can’t live on phone calls and social media only….
But; there is a second part of the phrase it’s not just let go. I may hold on as well. Goodbye physically doesn’t mean complete goodbyes. We may hold on to beautiful memories and lessons. We may hold on to dear and precious moments both happy and sad. We hold on to friendships that will last over time where ever we might go and where ever we will be.
We know we have dear friends in so many places by now that where ever we might go one day, we have a friend to reunite with. Including places like Gambella, Chin State, Korea, Malaysia, South Africa, the States and England. People keep moving around but we may hold on, knowing we share a friendship, memories and a way of living.

We loved
it when we went back to Australia last June and could reunite with so many dear
friends over there. We love it each time we go back to the Netherlands and
catch up with family and friends there. And we LOVE it when we can welcome
people in our house and lives here in Jordan and show them what life is like in
the Middle East.
Dear and
precious friends,
Maybe we
don’t say it enough, maybe sometimes we lack in keeping you guys updated, but
please remember we have a very special place in our heart for all of you around
the world.
Hold on,
let go; let go, hold on

Wat mooi over nagedacht; ik ben onder de indruk!
