Op de een of
de andere manier heb ik de gewoonte om voor elke ZOA organisatie waar ik voor
werk een weekendje of weekje weg te organiseren voor het personeel. In
Nederland was dit 3 jaar geleden een weekend met alle ZOA NL staff naar
Rabenau. Vorig jaar zaten we met alle staff van ZOA Ethiopie voor een week in
Debre Zeit voor een staff retreat. En afgelopen week kwam alle staff van ZOA
Myanmar bij elkaar in Kalaw voor een week training en team building. Leuk zal
je denken. En dat is het ook. Weer even terug naar je studententijd. Gaan nadenken
over de sport en spel middag. Een wandeling door de bergen. Inspiratie op doen
voor de pub quiz night. Of tal van you tube filmpjes afspelen van De Lama’s om
ideeen te krijgen voor de improvisatie avond. En dan natuurlijk nog de prijzen
verzinnen, wat heeft geleid tot de introductie van de prestigieuze ‘golden
duck’. Heerlijk om de cijfertjes en alle logistieke en personeelsissues even
naast je neer te leggen en je creatieve alter ego aan te spreken.

Wat natuurlijk
nog veel leuker is, is om te zien dat uiteindelijk 45 collega’s een geweldig
mooie tijd hebben gehad in de heuvels van Kalaw. In Yangon, Sittwe, Buthidaung
en Taungoo (de 4 locaties van onze kantoren) begon het inmiddels al redelijk
oververhit te raken aan het einde van het droge seizoen. Daarom was het
heerlijk voor alle staff om even een weekje met de bus de heuvels in te
vluchten om meer dan 10 graden in temperatuur af te koelen. Voor velen was het
de eerste keer dat ze de heuvels van Shan state bezochten, of zelfs voor het
eerst dat ze hun eigen provincie verlieten. Dus hoewel het voor meer dan de
helft van de groep een busrit was van ongeveer 24 uur, heb ik niemand horen
klagen over de afstand die ze moesten afleggen.

Wat even
wennen was hoe stipt alle staff op tijd was. Indien ontbijt van 7 tot 8 uur
was, zat de hele ontbijt zaal vol om 7 uur. En zaten de meesten al om 8.15 in
de zaal te wachten totdat de training om 8.30 zou aanvangen. Het waren over het
algemeen de 5 buitenlanders in het team die bij de meeste activiteiten als laatste kwamen aan druppelen...

Wat ook opviel
was het aantal selfies dat werd gemaakt, alleen of met een groepje. Tijdens de
wandeling liepen verschillende van de staff met een selfie stick door de
heuvels van Kalaw, om maar geen spot te missen voor de perfecte selfie. Ook op
Facebook gonst de naam nu rond van CDN-ZOA met tal van foto’s en selfies van
ons team in Kalaw. Goede PR zullen we maar denken.

Nu weer terug
aan het werk. Samen staan we nu sterker. One team one dream.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Somehow I got into the habit to organize a weekend or
week away for each ZOA office I work for. 3 years ago this was a weekend away
for all ZOA NL staff to Rabenau. Last year we gathered for a week with all
staff of ZOA Ethiopia in Debre Zeit for a staff retreat. Last week all staff of
ZOA Myanmar travelled to Kalaw for a week of training and team building. I hear
you saying nice. And that is correct. Back to the days when we were students.
Putting together a sport and games afternoon. A hike through the mountains.
Getting inspiration for the pub quiz evening. Watching many you tube movies
about improvisation stand-up comedians to get ideas for the improvisation
night. And of course coming up with the prices to be won, which resulted in the
introduction of the ‘golden duck’. Great to put the numbers and logistic and HR
related issues aside and use your creative alter ego.
What of course is even more fun, is to see that 45 colleagues
had a great time at the hill station of Kalaw. In Yangon, Sittwe, Buthidaung
and Taungoo (the 4 locations of our offices) things were further heating up at
the end of the dry season. Therefore, it was great to escape the office for a
weak and take the bus into the hills to cool down by more than 10 degrees. For
many of the staff it was the first time they visited the hills of Shan State,
or even the first time they travelled outside their own state. So although for most
of the staff the bus trip took about 24 hours to Kalaw, I have not heard any
complaints from the staff about the distance.
Although I already had some experience with organizing
similar events for ZOA in Netherlands and Ethiopia, I was surprised how punctual
the Myanmar staff were. If we would have breakfast from 7 to 8am, the whole
dining room was full at 7am. And most of the staff were waiting in the
conference room at 8.15am for the training to start at 8.30am. In general it
were the 5 foreigners in the team who would show up last/late at activities…
What was also interesting to see was the huge number of
selfies people were taking, alone or with a group. During a full day hike
several of the staff were carrying their selfie stick through the hills of
Kalaw, to make sure they would not miss the perfect selfie spot. Also on
Facebook the word is out that CDN – ZOA organized a staff conference with many
pictures and selfies of our team in Kalaw. Great free publicity. Getting our
name out there.
Now back to work. Together we are stronger. One team one
dream!
